Under the pressure of a rapidly growing population, changing family structures, and frequent natural disasters, the question of Japan’s social security and financial stability is becoming increasingly clear. In this context, life insurance companies in Japan aim to restore their role in 2026 by strengthening customer trust and confidence, increasing their participation in building a sustainable society and raising awareness about the work and purpose of the life insurance sector.

Yukinori Takada, president of the Life Insurance Association of Japan (JIAG), said this in his New Year’s message. “Now is the right time to fulfill the mission of the life insurance sector,” he said in his message. ’

The most important point that Takada made in his speech was that building trust should not just be a matter of image or publicity, but that it should be reflected in every policy sale, advice, claims resolution, and complaint management. He, therefore, emphasized on customer-centric management and made it clear that further initiatives would be taken to ensure the best interests of the customer. This includes strengthening compliance and risk management, especially in direct sales channels, improving the quality of sales behavior, product presentation, information disclosure and advice tailored to customer needs. He also called for strengthening support for independent agencies to work more effectively and consistently in the implementation of the Insurance Business Act. “From an industry perspective, the more disciplined and transparent the distribution system is, the stronger public confidence in this sector, which is important for long-term market stability,” Takada said.

Takada presented life insurance not only as a provider of financial security products but also as an active partner in building a sustainable society. According to him, to build a better coexistence future, the industry needs to take practical initiatives in the areas of health, quality of life and inclusive work culture.

Towards this goal, the message states that a seminar will be organized on welfare, a report on subconscious bias will be published, and programs to develop women leadership in member companies will be forwarded. The importance of this is that the life insurance industry is not only talking about future risk management, it is also looking to raise standards in its internal culture, leadership structure and social impact. These initiatives may seem like ‘soft’ issues to many, but they are directly linked to the credibility and long-term resilience of the industry. Because sustainable management and a fair, inclusive work environment make organizations efficient, stable and reliable.

Takada’s message also emphasized his commitment to increasing public understanding. He believes that trust cannot be built among consumers and society unless there is a greater understanding of the various activities in the life insurance sector and the real contribution of the industry remains unrealistic. Therefore, plans have been announced to highlight the work and role of insurance sales professionals, as well as to publish historical documents and materials that connect the history of the industry to larger social currents. ’

On the one hand, it is to recognize business contributions and create information-based stories in the public domain. Life insurance is understood not only as a business transaction but also as a supportive framework for managing risk and maintaining stability in the society.

Finally, as Takada celebrated his centennial, his message was a positional statement: The life insurance industry will build on its historical legacy and work towards creating a society where people can live in health and peace. In an era of ageing pressures, disaster risk and uncertainty of the future, this message is not only a message to set goals for the industry, but also a commitment to move forward in 2026 on a foundation of trust, sustainability and community engagement. – Asia Insurance Review

Kathmandu.
